CALL FOR RELIEF
1. Background
2009 just came to an end, leaving behind no major natural disasters.
However at the very beginning of 2010, exactly on January 12, Haïti is being hit by a killer earthquake of a 7.3 magnitude on the Richter scale. The preliminary figures as to casualties report some 100 000 -200 000 dead and around 250.000 injured. Haiti is facing a situation where the rescued and the dead are still to be counted, along with the survivors.
2. The Challenges
. This major disaster left all local or international authorities in the country unprepared. Government at the highest level are also hit; the national palace and all the major official buildings have crumbled, as well as the UN headquarters in Haiti: The number of homeless stands at some 1.5 million. Security challenges must be faced: looting, angry crowds looking for something to eat, etc.
3. The Priorities
The search is still going on for the survivors and the dead, among the hundreds of victims still burried under the debris in Port-au-Prince and its suburbs; cities such as Leogane and various sectors downtown have disappeared. We face the dire need to relocate the surviving families. We must also give shelter and provide healthcare and food to the wounded, as well as transportation to the survivors returning to their hometowns.
4. The Goals
FONJAFE, as an organization working with the neediest in four areas of the country, including its hard-hit western part, is overwhelmed by the calls for assistance from the victims in all the above-mentioned priority areas. Unable to respond to the needs of all the victims, 200 families from the western part of the country and a group of volunteers working at FONJAFE as part of its regular staff, also among the victims, have been identified by FONJAFE as priority beneficiaries.
The priority objective is to provide emergency assistance to this group of victims through the following:
- clothing, food and healthcare to the 200 families (6 family members as an average);
5. The Recipients
Some 200 families will benefit from this assistance project while healthcare will be provided to some 150 wounded among the neediest.
